Any aquarist, whether beginner or experienced, will face even with the need to treat water and fish in the aquarium. What to do and how to do it, is explained in the rows below!

Fish kept in aquariums, can develop certain diseases caused by bacteria, fungi or parasites, against which you can buy different drugs in stores. However, it does not hurt to be careful with them, because not all substances in pet shops are tested for eradication of pests that attack tropical species.

Therefore, our recommendation is to not buy these drugs if not recommended by a specialist in the aquarium or a veterinarian specializing in aquarium. Otherwise, these use might only aggravate the situation and endanger the fish life.

When treating water from the aquarium, you should keep in mind a few rules:

Do not treat all the water in your aquarium at once, fish treatment you will be doing should take place in a smaller “treatment” aquarium.
After each water treatment, change a quarter of it at least once every 24 hours.
Do not change the type of medication and do not mix, especially if you don’t have an expert around.
During water treatment, stop carbon filtration (to lose water and medicine from the filtering).
To ensure a good concentration of oxygen in aquarium during the chemical water treatment, this aspect should be monitored.
Watch fish behavior during treatment. If they become restless, and move the tank switch it with a new clean water treatment tank.

But before starting any treatment in any case, check the water tank or basin. Often, problems can be solved if you just improve water quality, no need for chemical treatment.

Treatments for diseases of aquarium fish

The origin of diseases

The origin of the disease may be external:
– Introduction of a stressed over a journey fish that he did the country of origin or to the merchant’s store: he is ill and can contaminate other fish.
– Introducing a healthy or sick fish carrier.
– Introduction of polluted water of natural origin.
– Accidental introduction of various harmful substances, cigarette smoke or aerosol.
Obviously must take all precautions to avoid such accidents.

Diseases can be home-grown; it is a disorder of general equilibrium, leading to the development of disease present in some fish healthy carriers.
– Lowering the temperature or thermal shock, i.e. sudden variations, in one way or another, caused by a disorder of the heating system.
– Decreased oxygen levels.
– Excess nitrogen materials, because a malfunction of a filter or to large number of fish.
– Overall quality of water.
– Wounds received during a fight or a less hectic mating, shock or injury from reaching various decoration peaces.
– Malnutrition or improperly balanced diet.
– The presence of decaying plants.

Disease prevention
Better to prevent than to cure disease: the old and wise saying is perfectly true aquarists. Disease prevention involves a very careful observation of fish daily, and especially the environment, which requires some knowledge. The best prevention remains a correct balance of the aquarium.

Diseases and their treatments
Overall there are two types of diseases: infectious and noninfectious diseases. The first is caused by microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi or viruses carried by fish. Well-known triggers are: stress, poor diet, and low temperature. Some pathogens have a joint life cycle: a body part in a fish, some water.

Non-infectious diseases are caused by pathogenic organisms, but polluted environment and poor in nutrients (poor water quality, malnutrition). Avoid using a cocktail of drugs and overdose, which is unnecessary or harmful. It will meet during treatment even if symptoms disappear quickly apparent. But health remains the attention of your lifelong fish. During treatment, fish food should be moderate, but with natural foods. After healing, we will provide a varied and well balanced organic substances, vitamins and minerals to strengthen overall.

Various stages of treatment:
1. Place the fish in an hospital aquarium.
2. Increase the temperature to 27-28 ° C.
3. Stop filtering, and if high water absorbent foam is present, increase ventilation.
4. Dilute drugs if necessary.
5. Progressively poor drugs in the aquarium, the operation will last at least an hour a day even if copper sulphate is used.
6. Observe the duration of treatment.
7. Half-emptying the tank, then fill with water up to previous level identical to that of origin.
8. Change 1 / 10 in volume every day for 5 days using an identical water type.
9. Renew treatment if necessary.
10 Reinstate the filter and foam absorber if present.
11. Progressively bringing back the temperature to a baseline temperature – over the duration of three days.
12. Restore ventilation at baseline.

Medicines for aquarium fish
There are a number of drugs sold in all stores, for one or more specific diseases. Medics made great progress in this field are constant in researching new drugs: very effective new drugs for marine fish have appeared in recent years. It is important to respect the dose and duration of treatment.

Bacterial diseases can be treated very successfully with antibiotics. However, we advise not to use these substances difficult to obtain, and can lead to the creation of resistant new strains. We can use different chemicals.

First, table salt (not with iodine) is effective in some cases only for freshwater fish. It is inserted into the water gradually to 5-10 g / liter, but this dose should not be exceeded! After healing, back page unsalted water gradually, through successive exchanges of 25% of the volume of container per day.

Methyl blue is effective against fungi. Dissolve 1 g of the powder, which we find in the pharmacy, in 1 liter of water. Fish treated with 0.5 to 1 ml / liter of this solution and the eggs with 1 ml / liter. Then gradually change every 25% of the volume of water to remove the product. Methyl blue is not used in sea water.

Malachite green is particularly effective against fungi. A solution of 1.5 g per 10 liters is made even when using treatment duration should not exceed 2 hours.

Formalin is active against external parasites. It will use a 40% formaldehyde solution, commercially available, which will be thinned 20ml/100litri water. Generally, treatment lasts between 15 and 20 minutes, in any case it should not exceed 30.

Copper sulfate is a product often used in seawater, but is toxic to invertebrates and some vegetable. Fish must be treated in a hospital tank if you are not the only occupants of the marine vessel. Dissolve 16 g of crystals in 1 liter of water, treatment dose is 10ml/100 liters of water with this level of dilution as a basis. As a precaution, place the tank only for one day dose.

Methyl blue, malachite green and copper sulfate dissolved in distilled water. All products, except salt must be stored in cool dark place, ideally the fridge. In this case we must be aware of possible dangers, especially for children who might be attracted by the colored liquids.

The main diseases in aquarium
Symptoms: White spots on body and fins (the size of a needle hole more than 1 mm)
Name the disease: Ihtioftirioza

Reason: The protozoan parasite, Ichthyophtirius
Water Type: Freshwater
Treatments: increasing temperature, formalin, malachite green, medicines trade
Note: contagious, she said if the temperature drops a major way.

Symptoms: White spots lower than the previous ones, creating even a thin, sometimes glued fins, touches of decor

Name the disease: Oodinioza
Reason: single-celled parasite, Oodinium, equipped with a flagellum to move
Type of water: fresh water, especially seawater
Treatment: Copper Sulfate, commercially available drugs
Note: Sometimes difficult to detect its onset.

Symptoms: Same as previous, but points are higher
Name the disease: Cryptocarioza
Reason: The protozoan parasite, Cryptocarion
Type of water: seawater
Treatment: Copper Sulfate, commercially available drugs

Note: It is sometimes accompanied by bleeding spots, fish have difficulty breathing.

Symptoms: fluffy-looking white tufts
Disease Name: Foam, Saprolegniaza
Reason: Mushrooms, including Saprolegnia

Type of water: fresh water, sea water often
Treatment: salt, malachite green or methylene blue (except sea water: copper sulfate, the drug trade)
Notes: disease development is favored by injuries.

Symptoms: 1 or both eyes swollen anorlam
Name the disease: exophthalmos

Cause: Bacteria, viruses, fungi, sometimes together
Water type: Fresh water and seawater
Treatments: Drug trade, copper sulphate
Note: Sometimes difficult to treat.

Symptoms: swollen abdomen, fins removed from the body

Name the disease: dropsy
Reason: In the main bacteria
Water type: Fresh water and seawater
Treatment: Copper Sulfate, commercially available drugs
Note: contagious, sometimes difficult to treat.

Symptoms: Operculii removed, unsafe swimming, tiny worms on the gills
Name the disease: Girodactiloza
Reason: Worm parasite, Gyrodactylus
Water Type: Freshwater
Treatment: salt, copper sulfate

Notes: Difficult to detect.

Symptoms: Inspiration from the surface air
Name the disease: “The lack of oxygen”
Reason: poor aerated, the overall balance of the aquarium disrupted
Water type: Fresh water and seawater

Treatment: Increase ventilation, check and adjust water parameters
Notes: Inhalation of air from the surface is sometimes the symptom of infectious disease.

Symptoms: weight loss, disturbed growth
Name the disease: “Power Problems”
Reason: malnutrition or lack of vitamins

Water type: Fresh water and seawater
Treatments: fresh food and live food in alternation
Note: The ability to incorporate fortified solutions of trade.

Symptoms: restlessness, erratic swimming, unusual behavior
Name the disease: “bad growth conditions”

Reason: Problems of oxygen, poor water quality (particularly nitrogenous substances)
Water type: Fresh water and seawater
Treatment: Increasing the amount of oxygen, a third change of water, checking its quality (nitrite, pH)
Note: Symptoms may apply to an infectious disease.

Symptoms: skeletal deformation fry

Name the disease: “The problem inherited”
Reason: genetic origin (genitorii)
Water type: Fresh water and seawater
Treatment: If many juveniles are affected, it means that there is a genetic problem parents, so you must separate
Note: It is often the case in which several juveniles in a generation are affected.
