Koi fish

What can make your yard or garden more beautify than a nice pond with elegantly colored furnished living- swimming Koi fish. The Japanese carp called Koi fish are freshwater fish originating in Japan. Their wild relatives are not as colorful and varied selections and crosses but because over time it was made by Japanese experts in special copies that we can see today. There are many varieties of koi fish in different colors and appearance of scales.

Living in groups Koi fish are social animals that love a large pond. If you have many copies you can see the existence of several groups and their social organization. These fish have long life, especially if well cared for. Average life expectancy is 25-30 years, but we met many copies that reached up to 60-70 years. In the field, rumors are that some copies could reach even up to 200 years. On the specialized market some more that specific examples of large sizes can reach up to $ 100,000 in price.

They are exclusively pond or lake fish. Japanese carp needs space to be able to move around and sufficiently clean water and oxygenated. An average sized adult needs at least 40 L of water. Young less, but taking into account the accelerated pace of growth is better to be prepared in advance with all conditions of space later when the fish will already be increased. Such a fish in an aquarium will not be able to grow and will probably die, if not he will not provide any visual spectacle as Koi fish are put in value only when viewed from above. Better calculate Pond ability to host fish see which is the optimum number of fish that would do good in that amount of water. Ask the expert advice in raising these fish (and there are few passionate in our country of this species of fish breeders). An overcrowded pond can not meet oxygen requirements of all the fish; the water can get dirty very quickly, and fish are the ones who will suffer. And eventually you have to lose everything because you will be deprived of the beauty and liveliness of a healthy fish.

Needing a clean and well oxygenated water the Koi fish should benefit from a well equipped pond. Before introducing the fish, you should equip the pond with a filter designed for a pond capacity wise. These fish are very greedy, and are therefore they will eat a lot and defecate a lot also so there will be an abundance of nitrates and the water gets dirty very easily. High concentrations of nitrates and ammonia in water are harmful to fish, while promoting the growth of algae. Test the water for these parameters, and if nothing changes after the start of the filter means that it is strong enough for the volume of water that you have, and then changed to require a higher level. Water oxygenation can be done by arranging an artesian fountain or a waterfall, so combined with pleasure. Being outdoors under direct sun exposure is the appearance and growth of algae very easily. Not harmful to fish (in moderation) because they feed on them. But multiply your visibility undermines the pond and fish. Planting pond plants can solve the problem because they compete with the algae on the same food source (nitrate and ammonia in water). Desensitizing light sources will also help in this regard.

Besides the fine pond algae, Japanese carp eat almost anything from small insects to some vegetables and fruits. Ideally, however, provide them special food for koi, the trading, which is in the form of pellets, granules or sticks. Fish fed with a quantity is consumed in 5 minutes to prevent its accumulation and falling to the bottom. Koi fish tend to eat unlimited amounts of food and can get to obesity, so do not feed them more than two, maximum three times a day during the summer when they are active. These fish hibernate in winter. From the time the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius they would not be fed anymore because their digestive system dose not work at an optimal condition and illness can occur. In this way we prepare for hibernation. When fall fishes you should make them be the subjected of a regime of weight gain, fat accumulated during summer will help them move more easily over the winter. Ake sure the lake where they will hibernate have at least 80 cm and dose not freeze completely.

The growth of Koi fish is an art in Japan and offers many satisfactions. Even if they are just kept as pets they still require attention and devotion.
