Poecilia reticulata) fish. The choice is understandable, because this fish are very easy to maintain and multiply, while being a beautiful and decorative species. Learn more about maintenance of the freshwater fish!

Being very sociable in large aquariums, Guppy fish can be associated with any other species with similar requirements and that is aggressive towards the guppy.

Ideal temperature: 24-26 ° C, but 18 to 30 ° C. tolerate even
Water hardness: medium, but can tolerate tougher water
PH: about 7, but the guppy fish is flexible in this regard.

These species is really beautiful if kept in small groups. In this case, males compete for females, a very beautiful process and they don’t hurt each other. Feeding them is not a problem;

Because of its simplicity, many more experienced breeders “despise” Guppy fish, classifying them as a “for the beginners” species. But that is a very nice fish; increasing fish population with genetically good fish is a big challenge.

Where did guppy fish originated from?

(Poecilia reticulata, in some places reticulatus) comes from rivers in Barbados, Venezuela, Trinidad and Guiana. It is very easy to distinguish gender: males are more colorful and smaller than females. Besides this, the male fish has a prolongation for mammals (a fin under the tail, which turned into a genital organ). Measuring 2.5 to 3 cm adult males are shorter then females which reach 5-8 cm.

These fish love to reproduce and breed again and again several times

The male goes after the female fertilizing her with his genital organ, then she needs approx. 4 weeks until she gives birth. The female can give birth several times with one fertilization, because sperm can be stored and so, even without a male, she can fertilize eggs. After birth, about 15-100 small guppy can be swimming in the tank, depending on food, age, female development and other factors. During birth, the female needs a separate aquarium, where you need to prepare a place for hiding since she can eat her babies.

Guppy fish and incest!

Growth is not a problem even for beginners since Small guppy fish are quite large from birth and even consume nutrient formula. Of course, the growth process is increased with live food consumption which generates a more rapid and spectacular growth. If you do not want the group to degrade within a few generations, avoid mixing the new born fish the female that gave birth to them or other females from their same generation. For this reason, the fish growers often grow guppy females and males separately to avoid unwanted growth and to select the most beautiful fish breeding.
